All for the Emperor

An engrossing account of an unusual piece of history

I didn’t know much about this period of Japan. Somehow, school only talked about the Meiji era or the war in the Pacific. The story is not a Dan Brown blockbuster but it’s written well and gives a real sense of the dilemmas posed by the standing of the Emperor and the usual political skullduggery that goes on when people are currying favour.
